Motorcycle insurance offers financial relief in the event of motorcycle theft, accident, loss, or damage. Motorcycle insurance also includes liability protection if you are held responsible for another person’s property damage or injuries.

As with other motor vehicles, the state of Texas requires all registered vehicles to carry a minimum level of insurance, including those who drive a motorcycle. This law is in force because Texas wants to ensure that every driver on the road has a certain level of protection for themselves and others.

It is a privilege to ride a motorcycle on public highways and roads, not a right. While this means of travel does not suit everyone, many love their motorcycles, which is their right only if done responsibly.

Texas states you must have insurance. It says that you must prove financial responsibility. Most individuals do this by obtaining liability coverage. In other words, you need to secure your financial responsibility with the state. You can do this by:

  • Filing a surety bond with the county clerk, listing two people that own real property in the state of Texas.
  • Make a deposit of $55,000 in securities or cash paid to the county comptroller.
  • Deposit $55,000 in cash or the form of a cashier’s check payable to a county judge.
  • You will need to provide a certification of self-insurance through the Texas Department of Transportation. To use this option, you must own 25 automobiles.

However, if you are like most individuals, you will want to carry liability insurance on your motorcycle with the following minimums:

  • $60,000 bodily injury coverage, total, per accident
  • $25,000 property damage coverage, per accident
  • $30,000 bodily injury coverage for each injured person, per accident

This is the minimum coverage required for you to ride your motorcycle legally. These dollar amounts, however, will not cover much. If there is a serious accident, you may be sued because the expenses were more than the amount of the coverage. It is always a good idea to increase the coverage dollar amounts.
